Returning from Time Off? Avoid These Common Workplace Hazards

After being away from work for a holiday or extended break, it can be challenging to regain focus. However, maintaining a safe workplace is critical—especially when complacency or rushing can lead to serious mishaps.

🔍 Here are four common errors that can lead to accidents:

Rushing: Feeling pressured to complete tasks quickly can lead to poor workmanship and increased accidents, particularly around weekends or when schedules are tight. Always prioritise safety over speed.  Take time to plan the work, understand the hazards, use the right tools, and wear the proper personal protective equipment … never rush through these steps to save time.

Frustration: We all experience frustration, but it can cloud our judgment and lead to mistakes. It’s essential to create an environment where frustrations are addressed constructively.  Actively listen to each other and engage with an open mind to create workable solutions and ease frustrations for all parties.

Fatigue: Both physical and mental fatigue can impair performance and increase the risk of injury. Be aware of the signs and ensure you and your team take necessary breaks.  Climate extremes (hot and cold), noise, and handling vibrating tools can place demands on workers and increase fatigue. Workers’ personal diet, sleep habits and emotional well-being can also impact fatigue at work.

Complacency: Experience does not equal immunity. Stay vigilant and committed to safety, regardless of how long you’ve been in the field.  Accidents can happen to anyone anytime.

Remember, safety isn’t just a checklist—it’s a mindset

By recognising these four common errors – we can work towards creating a safer, more attentive workplace. Remember, safety isn’t just about following rules; it’s about adopting the right mindset and staying vigilant at all times.

Let’s commit to returning to work with a renewed focus on safety, ensuring that we protect ourselves and our colleagues from preventable accidents.

Professional service that hasn’t cost me the earth! I call on Fran for updates or method statements or if I am asked for something specific for health and safety. She is always so helpful and practical; she works out solutions on site and puts the paperwork together for me. Even though I only call on her when I need her, she actually feels like one of the lads. Martin Bennett COOLRAIN CONCRETE
I was starting from scratch when I contacted Fran for a Health and Safety Statement. I thought it would be just a one-off need but as I have gotten different jobs, I have needed method statements, or extra training and I have always gone back to Fran. I would build all day long but ask me to do paperwork and I would run a mile! Fran makes it all so easy, there is no fuss, just an easy going get the job done attitude. Mark Fortune KEY CONSTRUCTION
